How can education blend movement, trust, and experiential learning in a meaningful way? A recent teaching mobility by Michal Petr from the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies to the West University of Timișoara in Romania has opened new doors for international cooperation in outdoor education and experiential pedagogy. The visit followed the Romanian delegation’s participation in our International Teaching Week this past April.

In collaboration with Assoc. Prof. Martin Domokos, a pilot workshop focused on adventure-based learning was launched, yielding promising results. Around 20 students and faculty members took part in hands-on activities exploring the use of low ropes courses as tools for personal development, teamwork, and building trust. The workshop combined essential theoretical foundations—materials, safety procedures, and methodology—with practical experience, including constructing the course directly on the faculty grounds.

While this approach is well established within recreation and leisure studies in the Czech Republic, it is still gaining ground in Romania. That made the exchange especially valuable for both sides. Discussions went beyond teaching methods and also focused on professional development for educators in the field of experiential learning. A central theme was the active involvement of students—not just as participants, but as co-creators and facilitators of programs. This hands-on role supports deep learning and nurtures a sense of responsibility.

Both institutions expressed strong interest in further developing the partnership. Plans are already underway to explore funding opportunities to support Romanian faculty mobilities to the Czech Republic. The aim is to build on the jointly developed program, deepen shared expertise, and invite Romanian colleagues to contribute directly to teaching at our faculty. Looking ahead, both sides also identified shared research interests—particularly in the area of resilience among youth and young adults in Czech and Romanian contexts. This timely topic connects theoretical insight with practical application and aligns closely with the values underpinning recreation and leisure studies.

Michal Petr’s mobility was not a one-off event, but rather a springboard for long-term international collaboration.

“The workshop proved that ropes courses are about much more than physical challenge—they foster trust, collaboration, and self-reflection. I believe this is the beginning of a meaningful and lasting partnership,” says Michal Petr.
